Background:The prevalence of erectile dysfunction (ED) has increased significantly since the early 2000s, with an estimated 2.2% of men aged ≥65 years with ED being diagnosed and 0.5% aged under the age of 40 years with ED. The prevalence of ED is associated with a variety of factors, including age, ethnicity, and sex. The prevalence of ED in older men has decreased due to the increasing prevalence of ED in older populations with a greater emphasis on cardiovascular health. To date, there is no definitive treatment for ED. While the treatment of ED with sildenafil has been shown to be effective in improving erectile function, the current study investigated the effects of sildenafil on erectile function and sexual functioning in older men with ED.
Methods:We conducted a prospective observational study that included 12 months of prospective observational data. Demographic and health characteristics of participants (age, sex, race, and socioeconomic status) and ED (age, sex, race, and socioeconomic status) were assessed. Conclusions:Sildenafil treatment of ED in older men with a higher prevalence of ED significantly improves the erectile function domain scores and improves IIEF scores.
